Gloppedalsura

Visste du at Nord-Europas største steinrøys befinner seg i Rogaland? Gloppedalsura ligger i Gjesdal og Bjerkreim i Rogaland og består av store rasblokker som ligger oppå en endemorene. Blokkene er store som hus og har blitt en populær turistattraksjon.

Slik ble Gloppedalsura skapt

For om lag 10 000 år siden smeltet isbreene bort fra Gloppedalen. En stor endemorene demmet opp mot Hunnedalselvas tidligere løp mot Veen og Vikeså, og det ble dannet en innsjø i Byrkjedalsgryta. Terrassene i Byrkjedal, 240 meter over havet, vitner om denne morenedemte sjøen. Påfølgende perioder med frost og opptining fikk enorme mengder steinblokker til å rase ut fra den sørlige fjellsiden. Det store raset la seg som en 100 meter tykk ur oppå endemorenen, og slik ble Gloppedalsura skapt.

Slaget under 2.verdenskrig

Etter at tyskerne angrep Norge i 1940 mobiliserte de norske styrkene ved Svanedal Ullvarefabrikk i Oltedal. Soldater fra Nord-Jæren og sørover forsøkte å stoppe tyskerne ved Bråstein, men ble raskt presset tilbake til nye stillinger i Dirdal og Gloppedalsura.

Den 22.april 1940 angrep tyske styrker Gloppedalsura fra Veen. De store steinblokkene fungerte som en festning for forsvarende nordmenn som holdt den tyske motstanden tilbake til gjennom hele dagen. Totalt skal 29 tyske soldater ha blir drept, selv om tallene er noe sprikende. I kveldstimene måtte nordmennene imidlertid trekke seg tilbake.

Skykula

Fra en tur opp Skykula ved Eigersund i Rogaland. Toppen er det høyeste punktet i Eigersund, og danner grensepunkt mot Bjerkreim kommune.

Navnet Eigersund kommer forresten fra norrønt «Eikundarsund», sundet mellom eiketrær. Men det får være en sak for en annen dag.

Det er asfalt hele veien opp til den store radaren på toppen. Og her kan du sette navnet ditt i en bok og nyte utsikten helt over til England.

Overvåkning av det norske luftrommet

På toppen finner du altså en stor radar som blir brukt til overvåkning av det norske luftrommet. Konseptet heter SINDRE (Silomontert, Nedsenkbar, Dekkbar, RadarEnhet) og inngår i NATOs radarkjede som går fra Nordkapp til Tyrkia.

Idéen var at man skulle bygge en rekke radarer som hadde ovelappende dekningsområde. Hvis det oppsto en trussel skulle radaren senkes ned i siloen, mens naboradarene opprettholt dekningen. Planen skulle vise seg å være for ambisiøs, og i første omgang ble bare tre radarer bygget.

Radarhodene er helautomatiske og styres fra kontrollsentralene i Sørreisa i Troms og Mågerø i Vestfold. Bildene sendes videre i NATO-systemet. Også Avinor får data til sin kontroll av den sivile lufttrafikken.

På toppen av Skykula ligger en av tre radarer med navn «Sindre I». Operative fra begynnelsen av 1990-årene. De andre to ligger i Vågsøy, Sogn og Fjordane og Vestvågøy, Nordland.

604 metres above the Lysefjorden

One of the most visited natural tourist attractions in Norway. In the municipality of Forsand in Rogaland county.

A steep cliff which rises 604 metres above the Lysefjorden. Atop there is an almost flat top of approximately 25 by 25 metres.

The cliff was formed during the ice age, approximately 10,000 years ago.

Deep crack

Did you know that along the plateau there continues to be a deep crack. Due to this, the plateau will at some point fall down, but all the geological investigations have revealed that this will not happen in the foreseeable future. Geologists have confirmed the safety.

Stavanger

A city and municipality in Rogaland county. Southwest of Norway. The third-largest urban zone and metropolitan area in Norway (through conurbation with neighbouring Sandnes).

Stavanger is one of Norway’s oldest cities. It emerged in the 12th century during a period of population growth and increasing urbanization throughout northern Europe.

The municipality is located in a coastal landscape, bordering the sea to the west and Boknafjorden in the northeast.

Located in Gjesdal and Bjerkreim. Rogaland county. Referred to as Northern Europe’s largest scree (steinrøys). Consists of avalanche boulders that lays oppon a terminal moraine (endemorene). Created 10,000 years ago when the glaciers melted away from Gloppedalen.

Rogaland is a county in Western Norway, bordering Hordaland, Telemark, Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder. Mainly a coastal region with fjords, beaches, and islands.

A fjord located in the Ryfylke area in southwestern Norway. Forsand municipality in Rogaland county.

The name means light fjord, and is said to be derived from the lightly coloured granite rocks along its sides.

The huge and well-known Preikestolen cliff overlooking the fjord, which is a major tourist destination for the region.

Dirdal

From Dirdal. A village in Gjesdal municipality in Rogaland county. The village lies at the end of the Dirdalen valley, which stretches to the southeast from Dirdal.

The mountainsides are partly steep and tall and stretching on the southwest side against Vådlandsknuten, 811 m.

Milano – San Remo

Today is the start of Milano – San Remo. An annual cycling race between Milano and Sanremo, in Northwest Italy. The first Monument of the cycling season. It´s the longest one day race on the professional calender. This year the race totals 291 kilometres and the finish is at the famous Via Roma.

Sprinters classic

Milano – San Remo is considered a sprinters classic because of its mainly flat course.
The most successful rider with seven victories is Belgian Eddy Merckx.

Last year, the race was won by John Degenkolb. The German outsprinted Alexander Kristoff and Michael Matthews on the Via Roma. Degenkolb will not defend his title as he is recovering from a training crash in January.
