Snow along the road most of the summer months

From the west cost in Norway. Sogn og Fjordane county. The Aurland Mountain (Aurlandsfjellet).

This road has been nicknamed «the snow road» («snøveien») because of the snow along the road most of the summer months. Highest point is 1306 meters.

Runs over the mountains between Lærdalsøyri to Aurlandsvangen.

You will encounter many striking contrasts over a short distance.

Few traces of mankind

One of the most distinctive things with this road is that the stretch is barren and go through a landscape that appears to be completely untouched. You get a feeling of being in a place where there are few traces of mankind.

Closed in winter

The road is closed in winter but the stretch from Aurlandsvangen is open as far as the viewing point at Stegastein all year round.

Aurlandsfjellet

There are eighteen highways in Norway designated by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration for their picturesque scenery and tourist-friendly infrastructure, such as rest stops and viewpoints.

Here we see Jens Peter Elton Gransaether (@iamjenspeter) climbing one of them. Aurlandsfjellet. Runs from Aurlandsvangen to Lærdalsøyri, a distance of 47 km. Sogn og Fjordane county.

Among the attractions close to this stretch are the villages of Lærdalsøyri, Flåmsbana, Aurlandsdalen and Nærøyfjorden. The crossing of Aurlandsfjellet also bypasses the Lærdal Tunnel. The world’s longest road tunnel.

The bike part of the Aurlandsfjellet Xtreme Triathlon (AXTRI) rolls over here too

A half iron distance triathlon race in one of Norway’s most scenic and dramtic areas.

You hit the climb right from T1. About 15km. 1320 meters. Then you dive down to Erdal. Hit an U-turn. Then back up again. Brutal! Especially when you’ve swum first and will have to run afterwards.

Saturday, August 13. See axtri.no for more info.
